Frequently asked questions
▶How many seconds in a day?
1 day equals 24 times 60 times 60, which is 86,400 seconds. So 1 hour is 3,600 seconds, 1 week is 6,04,800 seconds, and 1 year (365 days) is 3,15,36,000 seconds : about 31.5 million. A leap year of 366 days has 3,16,22,400 seconds. The calculator handles all these conversions in one step.
▶How do I convert milliseconds to minutes?
1 minute equals 60,000 milliseconds (60 times 1,000). So 1,80,000 ms equals 3 minutes, and 1 hour equals 36,00,000 ms. Milliseconds matter in programming, sports timing, and high-speed photography. For human reaction time, 250 ms is typical : about a quarter of a second between a stimulus and your response.
▶What is a fortnight?
A fortnight is exactly 14 days, or 2 weeks. The word comes from old English fourteen-night. It is still common in UK and Indian English for payroll, magazine subscriptions, and government circulars. A fortnight is 336 hours, or 12,09,600 seconds : sometimes joked about as a microfortnight, which is about 1.21 seconds.
▶Why does a year have 365.25 days?
Earth takes 365.2422 days to orbit the Sun once, slightly more than 365 whole days. The Gregorian calendar fixes this by adding a leap day (29 February) every 4 years, but skipping it in century years not divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not, keeping the calendar accurate to within a day over thousands of years.
▶Leap year versus common year: which months change?
Only February changes : 28 days in a common year, 29 days in a leap year. All other months stay the same. To check if a year is a leap year: divisible by 4 unless divisible by 100 but not 400. So 2024 yes, 2025 no, 2100 no, 2400 yes. The calculator accounts for this automatically when converting dates.
▶How long is one human generation?
A generation is typically defined as 25 to 30 years : the average time between a parent and their child. So 4 generations is roughly a century, and 40 generations stretches back 1,000 to 1,200 years. Genealogists often use 25 years for matriarchal lines and 30 to 32 years for patriarchal lines because of the typical age of becoming a parent.
