▶How is a point named in the Cartesian plane?

A point is written as $(x, y)$ where $x$ is the horizontal distance from the y-axis and $y$ is the vertical distance from the x-axis. The four quadrants give the signs: I (+,+), II (-,+), III (-,-), IV (+,-).

▶How do I use this lab?

Slide the x-coordinate and y-coordinate; the dot jumps around and the lab tells you which quadrant or axis it lies on. Try $(3, -2)$ to land in quadrant IV, or $(0, 5)$ to sit on the y-axis.

▶Common mistake on this topic

A very common slip is writing $(y, x)$ instead of $(x, y)$. Always put the horizontal value first. Forgetting this turns $(3, 5)$ into a totally different point at $(5, 3)$.

▶Where is this used outside maths?

Map apps on your phone use latitude and longitude, which work just like $(x, y)$. Carrom strikers, chessboard squares, and seat numbers in a cinema all use the same row-column pairing idea the lab teaches.
