Frequently asked questions

What are tens and ones?

Tens are bundles of 10, and ones are single units. So 32 is 3 bundles of ten plus 2 ones. Splitting a number into tens and ones is called place value.

How do I build a number in this lab?

Use one slider to choose tens, and another for ones. The lab shows the bundles in pictures and writes the final number. Try 5 tens and 4 ones to make 54.

When do we use tens and ones?

When Papa gives you 3 ten-rupee notes and 5 one-rupee coins, you have 35 rupees. Counting toffees in packs of 10 plus loose ones is the same idea. Tens and ones make counting much faster.

Tip to read big numbers

Always look at the tens digit first, then the ones. For 68, say sixty plus eight. With practice, you can read any two-digit number in one look without breaking it down.
