What can this fraction calculator do?

It adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides two fractions and shows the result in lowest terms. For example, 2 by 3 plus 3 by 4 gives 17 by 12, which is also 1 and 5 by 12. It also converts the answer to a decimal so you can sanity-check the value at a glance.

How do I enter a mixed fraction like 2 and 1 by 4?

Fractions versus decimals: which form should I use in an exam?

If the question gives fractions, keep your answer as a fraction in lowest terms unless it asks for a decimal. Exact fractions like 1 by 3 are more precise than 0.333. In daily life : measuring milk or fuel : decimals are friendlier, but in maths, science and accounting, fractions usually win.

Why is my reduced fraction different from the textbook answer?

Sometimes a textbook leaves the answer as 4 by 6 instead of reducing to 2 by 3, or the other way round. This calculator always reduces fully using the highest common factor. So 4 by 6 is shown as 2 by 3. Both forms are mathematically equal; the lowest-terms form is just the standard.
