Frequently asked questions
▶What is BMI and how is it calculated?
BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. For example, a person who is 70 kg and 1.70 m tall has a BMI of 70 divided by 2.89, which is about 24.2. It is a quick screening number, not a full health check.
▶How do I use this BMI calculator?
Enter your weight in kilograms and your height in either centimetres or metres. The calculator instantly shows your BMI value and the WHO category. Try changing the height by even one centimetre to see how sensitive the result is, especially near the borderline values like 24.9 and 29.9.
▶Is BMI reliable for athletes and bodybuilders?
Not always. BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat, so a fit athlete with heavy muscle mass can land in the overweight band even with low body fat. Cricketers, gym-goers and wrestlers often see this. Treat BMI as a starting point and pair it with waist measurement or a body-fat reading for a fuller picture.
▶Why does my doctor in India sometimes use different BMI cut-offs?
Indian health bodies often follow Asian-Indian cut-offs because South Asians tend to carry more visceral fat at lower weights. Many doctors call 23 to 24.9 overweight and 25 and above obese for Indians. This calculator shows the WHO global bands; ask your doctor if they want to apply the stricter Indian thresholds.
▶BMI versus waist-to-hip ratio: which is better?
BMI is easier and uses only weight and height, but it does not show where the fat sits. Waist-to-hip ratio captures belly fat, which is more closely linked to diabetes and heart disease risk. Many Indian clinics now use both together rather than picking one. For a quick home check, BMI is fine; for risk profiling, add a measuring tape.
▶Can I use this BMI calculator for children?
Not directly. Adult BMI categories do not apply to anyone under 18 because children's body composition changes with age. For kids, doctors use BMI-for-age percentile charts that compare the child to peers of the same sex and age. Use this tool only as a curiosity check and rely on a paediatrician for a real assessment.
