Algebraic vocabulary
Before we start multiplying and expanding, let's give names to the building blocks. The same word can mean different things in everyday English, so being precise in mathematics saves a lot of confusion later.
Concept
Variable. A symbol (usually a letter like ) standing for an unknown or general number. In , the variable is .
Constant. A fixed number that does not change. In , the constant is .
Term. A combination of constants and variables joined only by multiplication. Examples: . Terms are the "atoms" of an algebraic expression.
Coefficient. The constant in front of a term. In the coefficient is . In it is . The coefficient of alone is (often hidden), and the coefficient of is .
Algebraic expression. A sum or difference of terms. Examples: , , .
By the number of terms, expressions are named:
- Monomial: one term. .
- Binomial: two terms. .
- Trinomial: three terms. .
- Polynomial: any number of terms (the general word).
Like terms vs unlike terms. Two terms are like if they have the same variable parts (same letters, same powers). and are like. and are like. But and are unlike , different powers.
Only like terms can be combined: . Unlike terms must be left alone: does not simplify.
