Dividing decimal by decimal
The trick: turn the divisor into a whole number by multiplying both numerator and denominator by the same power of ten.
Idea
To compute where has decimals, multiply both by , where is the number of decimal places of . This shifts both decimal points right by and makes a whole number. The quotient is unchanged.
Example: . Divisor has decimal place. Multiply both by : . So .

Always estimate the quotient first. , roughly , which is about . So our answer is reasonable.
Two equivalent approaches:
- Multiply both sides by power of ten.
- Rewrite the division as a fraction ; multiply numerator and denominator by same power of ten.
