Comparing and ordering decimals
Is bigger than ? Many students wrongly say " is bigger because is bigger than ." Let's fix this for good.
Idea
To compare two decimals:
- Equalise the digits after the point. Pad shorter numbers with trailing zeros , they don't change value. So compare as against .
- Compare the whole-number parts first. Bigger whole-part wins. (.)
- If whole parts are equal, compare digit by digit from the tenths place. First column with different digits decides.
With this rule, vs : tenths digits are vs . , so , i.e., .
A second helpful technique is the number line. Between and , divide into equal parts; each tick is a tenth. Then is at the third tick and is between the second and third (closer to the third). sits to the right, so it is larger.
When ordering many decimals, line them all up by the decimal point and pad to the same length. Then sort column by column from left to right.
