Chapter 5: Playing with Lines
Lift your pencil and put it on paper. Move it. That tiny path you make is a line. Every drawing, every letter, every shape begins with a line!
What we'll do
- Draw straight lines and curved lines.
- Learn about standing (vertical), sleeping (horizontal) and slanting lines.
- Use lines to make pictures and patterns.
The big idea
A straight line is one that does not bend at all , like the edge of a ruler. A curved line bends and turns , like a rainbow or a wave.
Straight lines can sit in different ways.
A line that goes from left to right, lying down quietly, is a sleeping line (we also call it horizontal). The edge of your table is a sleeping line.
A line that stands tall, going from down to up, is a standing line (or vertical). A coconut tree stands up tall like a vertical line.
A line that leans, neither sleeping nor standing, is a slanting line. The slope of a roof or a slide in the park is slanting.
When we mix straight, curved, standing, sleeping and slanting lines, we can draw houses, trees, kites, autos , anything!
Let's play!
Line walk. Walk around your house. Find one sleeping line, one standing line, one slanting line and one curved line. Tell where you saw each.
Rangoli lines. Use chalk to draw a small design using only straight lines. Then draw another using only curved lines. Which feels softer?
Body lines. Stand straight , your body is a standing line. Lie down , you become a sleeping line. Lean to one side , slanting!
A small story
Ravi was drawing his village. The road was a long sleeping line. The temple flag pole was a standing line. The kite string went slanting up to the sky, and the smoke from the chulha curled in a curved line. Just like that, his picture was full of every kind of line.
