Chapter 2: Shapes Around Us

Pick up any object near you , a ball, a soap box, a ladoo. Each one has a shape that we can name. Let us go shape-hunting!

What we'll do

• Meet the solid shapes: cube, cuboid, sphere, cylinder and cone.
• Find these shapes in things at home.
• Notice flat sides, curved sides and corners.
• Stack and roll shapes to see how they move.

The big idea

The world is full of solid shapes. A solid shape is something we can hold in our hand , it is not flat like a paper drawing.

A cube has 6 flat square sides, all the same size. A dice is a cube.

A cuboid also has 6 flat sides, but they look like rectangles. A matchbox or a brick is a cuboid.

A sphere is round all around, like a ball or a laddoo. There are no flat sides at all.

A cylinder is like a tin of biscuits. Two flat circles at the top and bottom, and a curved side in the middle.

A cone is pointy at the top and round at the bottom , like an ice-cream cone or a birthday cap.

Some shapes can roll (sphere, cylinder, cone). Some can only slide (cube, cuboid). Some can stack neatly on top of each other.

Let's play!

Shape hunt. Walk around your house for five minutes. Find one cube, one cuboid, one sphere, one cylinder and one cone. Tell your family what you found.

Garba dance for shapes. Sing the names of shapes as you clap: "Cube, cuboid, sphere, cylinder, cone!" Tap a real object each time.

Roll or slide? Take a small box, a ball and a tin. Push each one gently. Which rolls? Which slides? Which can do both?

A small story

Heena and Aatif were tidying the kitchen. Heena stacked the round laddoos in a bowl , but they kept rolling away! Aatif tried to stack the matchboxes , they sat neatly, one on top of the other. They learnt that flat sides help us stack, and round sides love to roll.
