Chapter 9: Utsav

Utsav means festival! The house is decorated with rangoli, marigold garlands and twinkling lights. Look closely , there are patterns everywhere. Today we become pattern detectives!

What we'll do in this chapter

• Spot patterns in shapes, colours and sounds.
• Find what comes next in a pattern.
• Make our own patterns with stones, leaves or buttons.
• Look for patterns in real festival things , rangoli, bangles, garlands.

The big idea

A pattern is something that repeats. Look at a bangle , red, green, red, green, red, green. That is a pattern! You can guess what comes next , red again!

Patterns can be made of:

• Colours , yellow, blue, yellow, blue…
• Shapes , circle, square, circle, square…
• Sizes , big, small, big, small…
• Sounds , clap, stamp, clap, stamp…

When we look at rangoli, we see patterns of dots and curves. When we see a sari border, we see flowers repeating again and again. Even claps in a song make a pattern!

Once you spot the pattern, you can carry it on. The rule helps you guess what is next.

🌸 Marigold Garland

Use yellow and orange paper flowers (or just buttons of two colours). Make a garland: yellow, orange, yellow, orange, yellow, orange. Now make a trickier one: yellow, yellow, orange, yellow, yellow, orange.

🥁 Sound Pattern

Clap your hands: clap-stamp-clap-stamp. Do it again and again. Can your friend join in? Now try clap-clap-stamp. It is a new pattern!

🎨 Rangoli Time

Take small stones or seeds. Make a rangoli pattern on the floor , circle of red, circle of yellow, circle of red, circle of yellow. Add flowers and diyas around it!

✏️ What Comes Next?

Draw on paper: circle, triangle, circle, triangle, circle, ___. What goes in the blank? Try another: 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, ___.

A small story

It was Diwali at Tara's house! Mother was making a big rangoli. She placed a red flower, then a yellow flower, then a red, then a yellow. Tara watched. "Mama, I know what comes next , red!" Mother smiled, "Smart girl!" Then little brother put a blue flower by mistake. Everyone laughed. "That broke the pattern!" said Tara.
